The Vale Heritage Centre Coalition [1] Wiki

The Vale Heritage Centre Coalition is a group formed to lobby for a Vale Heritage Centre.

"We believe that the Vale of Glamorgan has a rich, varied and important history that should be preserved for posterity and displayed in an appropriate venue or venues for the benefit and education of local people and visitors".

Our Aim

We are calling for the space set aside in the planning application submitted by the Barry Waterfront Consortium for community use to be dedicated to the construction of a Vale Heritage Centre to educate, inform and entertain the people of the Vale, and visitors to this historic region.

We are calling for local historians and local history groups to support this concept, and to provide their input into "Our Dream" to help shape the final Vale Heritage Centre.

The VHCC Constitution defines how we intend to operate. It is currently a work in progress.

Our Dream is a Barry-based centre (or centres), that will fulfil many objectives. This is also a work in progress, and we welcome input. Tell us what you think!

Why a Wiki?

Good question!

Wikipedia is unreliable and "broken beyond repair", co-founder Larry Sanger said in 2007 ([2]) and in the relatively few months that this Wiki has been available, there has been a steady stream of crap posted by idiots. As a result, I have tried to lock the wiki to prevent this junk appearing, which means that unfortunately, to participate, I now need to create an account for you.

If you would like to contribute, please email me at steve@parkit.co.uk, with the name that you would like to post with, and I'll set up an account for you. Once you are registered, you can contribute as much as you wish.

So, why a Wiki?

A Wiki is a system that allows anybody to enter information, which can then be amended by other users. The process is tracked automatically, revisions are kept, and moderation is allowed, including "rolling back" to previous versions.

A Wiki allows us to display what we know, and allows others to add their information as well, enhancing everybody's knowledge.

And it's so simple to use! You can see two types of links on this page - Blue and Red. Blue links take you to a page that already exists. Red links don't have pages yet, so if you click on them, you get taken to a screen that allows you to create the page! Type something that is relevant for that page, preview it, and when you're happy, save it. To create a new page, simply refer to it by name in an existing page, then highlight the name and click the "internal link" button at the top of the editing screen. When you save the page, it will have the link ready to be clicked, and take you to that page where you can edit or create it. And it's much simpler to do it than to describe it!

The most important thing (according to the people that created this Wiki thing) is BE BOLD.

Dive in and add something! It can be undone if necessary, but have a go!

So - please email me NOW to get your account set up!

Broad Categories!

So, to start this Wiki, let us set up some broad categories that we could be interested in...

We could be interested in Places in the Vale, and the People of the Vale...

Then we have The Arts, Architecture, Artifacts (things!), Events, Geography, Geology, Business, Entertainment, Recreation, Sports, Politics, Health ...and probably a whole lot more!

Or we could look at it from a different angle - Time and Dates, such as Prehistory, Palaeolithic to Pre-Norman, The Romans, The Dark Ages, Medieval Times, The Industrial Age, The Great War, The Second World War, The Twentieth Century and so on...

And we really must have a place where people can enter their own stories and reminiscences!

And a place where people can ask questions - like Anybody Remember?

And although these should be cited as references in individual articles, and there should be links from the People section, a list of reference works could be useful!
